Tonight is pretty unique considering it’s an ending and a beginning, and that’s exactly how it is for me, too. This is my first New Year’s Eve not being spent in Highland, with dozens of friends, games, sparkling grape juice, glittery clothes, and music. It has been that way for me and my friends back home since seventh or eighth grade, and this is the first year I am away. Surprisingly, I am not sad. I’m so happy that I got those fun New Year’s Eve’s every year for so long, and I hope everyone else enjoyed them as much as I did.
This night is also symbolic of a new beginning. My first full year of marriage begins to get under my belt in nine hours! Who knows what I am going to do this year, 2009. Who knows where we’ll be. More and more every day, I am feeling led to Troy, IL to be with family. So many cons…yet so many pros…and so many subtle things happening that I think are from the Lord, guiding me back to the place I never thought I’d venture again. What will happen? I’m not sure. It’s very uncertain, but I’m just waiting to see if the door opens or closes. Then we’ll know.
Tonight is so special because I not only get to spend it with my new husband, but I get to be with the best friend of my life…Sandee! It’s crazy, but she is in Springfield! Praise the Lord for Zach coming to school here five years ago, or she would not have been here! I am so excited to be spending it with her. Pete and I are going out to dinner with her and Zach at 5:30, and then going to First Night, something that completely deviates from every other new year’s eve I’ve ever had. There will be ice skating, food, 80’s video games, lights, fireworks at midnight, Building 429 will be playing…oh man, I am just stoked.
It’s funny how some things don’t change. I had lunch with some friends in Highland the other day, as Pete and I were traveling back from Indiana, and I overheard everyone talking about the latest drama…where, oh where, will the New Year’s Party be? Ever since dad moved away from Highland three years ago, it’s had to be somewhere else because I always put it on there. So much fun!! But anyway, other people are having to host it now since we’re not there anymore, and it’s not going so well for them. Two people offered their houses, and then someone else offered a complete stranger’s house. It was just funny to listen to because each individual felt so strongly about their own view…and I just smiled, looked at Sandee and saw her smiling the same way, and thought to myself, “Mmm. This is the life, not having to be involved in this…one more drama that I’m not here for.” Last night when Sandee and I were spending time together at my place, we laughed about how I’d still probably get blamed for this conflict. Haha! Oh, high school.
That’s all I have to say. I’m pumped for a new New Year’s experience tonight, and pumped for the year ahead. Although, I did tell Pete this morning that I don’t enjoy writing 9’s as much as I do 8’s…so that will be hanging over my head this entire year, considering it’s the year of 2009 :)
