On New Year’s Eve, Sandee and I were with our men at the Building 429 concert. There was this song, called Always, that just captured my heart. At the end of the concert, I heard the same message I’ve heard three or four times since 2008 began: sponsor a child. A few months ago at SBU, I felt led to sponsor a child, so I picked up a packet and took it back to my room…and let it sit there until the end of the semester came, and I reluctantly threw it away. It’s depressing that I possibly threw away that child’s future and their hope.
However, perhaps that’s not where I was being led, and perhaps that’s not who I was meant to sponsor. I don’t say that just to make myself feel better (well maybe a little) but I feel that it’s the truth. At the end of the Building 429 concert, the lead singer gave the same powerful message and shared his own experiences with sponsoring kids. I Felt Led and so no matter how weird it was to raise my hand to get the packet, I did. The child that came to me was from the Philippines. Who was sitting next to me but my best friend Sandee, who left her heart in the Philippines? I leaned over and handed her the packet and said, “This child is for you.” She was shocked and said, “Whoa. I’ve been praying about sponsoring a child for so long but really wanted one in the Philippines…I can’t believe it!” So, I had Pete raise up his hand to get another packet, and when it came to me, I could scarce believe my eyes: My child was from Brazil, the very place I left my heart just a few years back. What are the chances? What a tremendous signal from the Lord that this was the way to go. Without hesitation, both Sandee and I were filling out the packets and giving out our credit card number for them to take out the $30 each month. $30. That’s it. That’s one meal at any fancy restaurant to me, but my child’s clothes, food, water, and Life. It’s about time I stopped paying so much attention to myself, and gave a slice to the next generation, a child I have already fallen in love with. Micheline Dolfino. And for Sandee, Leo Jay. The Lord orchestrated this match with perfection.
